Solo live performance piece which premiered at Cabaret Voltaire at Manifesta 11 in Zurich in September 2016. The performance was included in the Cabaret der Kunstler – Zunfthaus Voltaire programme curated by Manuel Schweiwiller for Manifesta 11 at Cabaret Voltaire — the historic “birthplace” of Dada performances. The title Talhiya Lapse refers to the Arabic for entertainment or diversion and pertains to the laws in Saudi Arabia which restrict womens rights; in this case, the performance relates to the law which until 2013 enforced a total ban on women cycling. This law was then changed to allow women to cycle for “entertainment” or leisure but not as a form of transport, e.g. for commuting.
Article from The Guardian by Nabila Ramdani [03.04.13]. Saudi Arabia’s religious police are encouraging women to cycle, but not to go anywhere: they must be in parks, covered up, accompanied by a male relative. See article here.
